John Joseph Airhart
May 15, 1940 ~ November 25, 2023 (age 83) 83 Years Old
John J. “Jack” Airhart of North East, PA, finished his earthly labor according to God’s good plan, and left this world on November 25, 2023, at the age of 83. He left behind beloved family and dear friends, and we will all miss him deeply.
Jack was born in Baltimore, MD, on May 15, 1940, the youngest of four children to George Patrick Airhart and Ethel M. Luther Airhart. He spent most of his childhood years in Mt. Lebanon, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh, and graduated from Penn State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Jack followed in his father’s footsteps by taking a position with General Electric, and for the next 30 years, he enjoyed a very successful career designing and building steam locomotives. During this time, the Lord blessed Jack with work assignments all over the world, including China, Pakistan, Australia, Mexico, and Kenya. He became a skilled photographer and captured on film many of creation’s amazing vistas and exotic animals that he witnessed during his travels.
Jack eventually settled in North East and retired in 1995, where he spent the next 28 years enjoying his friends and hobbies, especially skeet shooting and performance vehicles. Jack was a long-time member of the North East Sportsmen’s Club, where he served as director for several years, and he generously shared his financial blessings with numerous charities as well.
Jack was preceded in death by his father and mother, his siblings Patrick “Pat” Airhart, Robert “Bob” Airhart, and Nancy Ann Airhart Berkhouse, and his nephew Patrick “Pat” Allen Airhart. He is survived by his nieces Linda Lee Airhart Jones of Fayetteville, GA, and Julie Beth (Berkhouse) Becker of Flint, TX, and by his nephews Jeffrey Joseph Berkhouse of Spring, TX, Gregory Allen Berkhouse of Tulsa, OK, The Reverend Casey Stephen Berkhouse of Tyler, TX, Michael Robert Airhart of Buckeye, AZ, and John Patrick Airhart of Schenectady, NY.
A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2024, details of which will be shared once available. It was Jack’s wish that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Erie City Mission, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Shriners Hospital of Erie.
