Obituary

Merton Albert Bayle, 92, of French Creek, NY passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at UPMC Hamot surrounded by his family.  He was born on October 29, 1930, on his grandparents farm, on Rouse Hill Rd., in French Creek, to the late Albert S. and Ruby E. Powers Bayle. 

When Merton was young, his family moved to a farm on Stateline Rd., in French Creek, where he would live the rest of his life.  He attended a one-room school house down the road through the eighth grade and graduated from Clymer High School in 1949.  He later met Betsy Alcorn, from Greenfield, PA and they were married on August 24, 1957.  Merton was a log truck driver for nearly thirty years until the early eighties.  He then drove for Maplevale Farms and later for Corry Peat. Merton enjoyed gathering, cutting, and splitting firewood; as well as camping, boating, and skiing on the Kinzua reservoir, being with family, ice cream, and he loved making popcorn every Sunday evening. 

Merton is preceded in death by his parents Albert Bayle and Ruby “Powers” Bayle, his wife of 65 years Betsy Bayle, and an infant daughter Tiffany Bayle.  He is survived by his older sister Rose Proctor of High Springs, FL, and four younger sisters; Marjorie Morton of Wattsburg, PA, Sally Peck of Leesburg, FL, Nancy Garfield of High Springs, FL, Joanne (David) Dougherty of McKinney, TX; his three children Todd Bayle (Terri), Tamara Tenpas (Bruce), and Trevor Bayle, all of the Clymer, NY area; five grandchildren, David Tenpas, Abigail Bayle, and Bryan Tenpas, all of Clymer, NY, Jeremy Bayle of Dalhart, TX and Katelyn Frye (Tristen) of Jamestown, NY; one great-granddaughter on the way; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Monday, July 3, 2023, at 3 P.M. at Park United Methodist Church, 30 N. Lake St., North East, PA.  Pastor Eric Leonard will officiate.  A burial service for family and friends of Merton and his wife Betty will be held on August 19, 2023, at Cutting Cemetery, on the corner of Rt. 426 and 474 in Clymer, NY.
