Russell Benfield "Ben" Mosier, Jr., DDS, CAPT, DC, USNR (Ret), age 88, passed away peacefully on October 14 in North East. Ben loved his family and friends, new and old. He will be greatly missed by them all.
Ben was born in Corry, PA on December 26, 1934, son of the late Dr. Russell B. Mosier, Sr., and Ethel E. (Jenkins) Mosier. He graduated from Corry High School in 1952 and attended Thiel College, serving as president of Delta Sigma Phi. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School in 1959, where he met his future wife Judith Seanor Mosier. They were married for 46 years until her passing in 2006.
Ben entered the service as a dental ensign in 1959 and served in Jacksonville, FL, and Okinawa. After completing active duty, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserves and retired with the rank of captain after 26 years of service.
In 1962, Ben and Judy moved to North East and took over Dr. Sam Anderson’s dental practice. He practiced dentistry for nearly 40 years, becoming a Fellow and Master of the Academy of General Dentistry and serving as President of the Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry. He developed several innovations in dental equipment, including floss holders and plastic trays for autoclaving.
Ben was a lifelong golfer and gardener. After retiring from full-time dentistry, Ben devoted his time to volunteering, including providing dental services at St. Paul’s Free Clinic in Erie. He drove patients for 20 years and over 100,000 miles for the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program. He served on the McCord Memorial Library board, the North East Township Water & Sewer board, and North East Jaycees among other civic volunteer positions.
Ben is preceded in death by his wife Judith Seanor Mosier. He is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Hansen (Michael) of Alexandria, VA, Amy Michael (Bryan) of Burlingame, CA, and Kathleen Mosier of Norfolk, VA; a son, Russell B. Mosier III (Carolyn) of Falls Church, VA; and eight grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Ben IV, Joshua, Vivian, Rebecca, David, Charlie, and Judy.
His family is very grateful to the staff at Parkside at North East and the Community Nursing Services of North East for everything they did to make his last year comfortable, engaging, and fun.
